The Education of Mom

Resources

Here I will be compiling links to special education resources and web sites for visual learners. These are all sources/techniques with which we have direct experience.

39 Dollar Glasses
We had a good experience here.

Alpha Smart
Alpha Smart offers small low-cost laptops designed for kids struggling with ELA. They come loaded with word-prediction software to help slow writers. This is another product we’ve found success with.

BBC Schools
All sort of interactive activities for all ages of school children. We particularly like their “Bite Size” geography lessons.

Calvert Homeschooling
Calvert offers a “scholastic” curriculum designed for children who need extra time and work on ELA. I have used this with my son.

Don Johnson
Don Johnson offers all sorts of products to help struggling learners. The one we’ve used is Co-Writer word prediction software.

Earobics
Does your child have an auditority processing problem? Here is help.

Electoral College
Daily updates on the election with clear graphics and historical comparisons.

Math Doesn’t Suck
A book by Danica McKellar. It’s aimed squarely at middle school girls and contains wonderful explanations of pre-algebra math concepts. P.S. My son uses it too.

Math Fact Cafe
This the best place I’ve found for free printable math worksheets.

Math Manipulatives
Rather than give links I’m going to suggest you search in Google “Shopping” for these. There are many suppliers in a wide price range and all of them are pretty much the same thing. These are excellent tools for visual learners.

Odyssey Online
Ancient history in a beautiful visual presentation.

Orthoptics
Orthoptics are exercises for eyes muscles. They are controversial, but they enabled my son to read! Go ahead and google it!

Quality Kits
Small and inexpensive electronics kits for your kids to build! Require a soldering iron and solder. My son just loves these. They come bagged with all the necessary parts and instructions.

Replogle manufactures all sorts of world gobes and they are MADE IN THE USA.

Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic
I’ll be posting about this wonderful organization. I have my son’s entire curriculum on CD and it has been an indispensible help  to us.

Timez Attack
When I thought my son would NEVER learn his times tables this program came to the rescue! It’s affordable and it works!

Understanding Evolution for Teachers
Free lessons plans!

Weekly Reader
I’m glad I got these. They just provided a HUGE U.S. Map and with the help of this website my son is learning about the electoral college.

More to come . . .
