BBC Schools – Blimy!

November 5, 2008 · Leave a Comment

I ran into a wonderful site at BBC Schools. It offers interactive activities divided up by grade level. It’s aimed at children in the UK so you’ll bump into the occasional British spelling or colloquial saying and plenty of math work in metric. My son is engaged by it and challenged by some of the quizzes. I particularly like Questionaut, a quiz game iin the Primary Bitesize section with beautiful graphics and questions just right for an 11-13 year old.

Does your child want to make a movie but doesn’t know where to start? Check out Me and My Movie! Not everything needs to be very visual.

If you’d like something more traditional there are texts with quizzes in the GCSE Bitesize section.  I’ve discovered a lesson on Iron Age Celts with a report form and all sort of other things. I could spend all day on this site and I’m sure I will someday soon. Right now, however, I have to go teach Spanish!

Hasta la vista!

Get Your Kid a Globe

October 20, 2008 · Leave a Comment

I can’t imagine a home without a globe! I grew up with a big, freestanding, lighted one which fascinated me. My son’s is not that fancy but answers the need remarkably well. It sits on his desk and is referred to almost daily. Best of all it was MADE IN THE USA! You can get yours from Replogle. They have a plant in Chicago and they have all kinds of globes in all price ranges. Mine was promptly delivered and nicely boxed. Go get one!

P.S. The folks at Replogle have no clue who I am, I just like them.
