The Education of Mom

About

I’m a married mother of two in Central Upstate New York. I work, I homeschool, I blog. I shovel snow from the roof. I take photos and I love to cook and craft.  I’m a member of the local organic food co-op. I homeschool my middle school son and my daugher is in a private middle school. Different solutions for different kids!

I do not homeschool for religious or philosophical reasons, I do it because it works for my son.
I provide a blogroll of informative and entertaining sites. Note: this does not mean I endorse every word on someone else’s blog!

I’ll be sharing my critical view of public schooling these days and I hope to be a helpful resource for secular homeschooling materials and special education material in particular. Come and laugh at my parenting adventures! (It’s laugh or cry!)

Hi! My name is Kim and I live in Prince William County Virginia. I noticed your blog about constructivist math and was immediately interested – my county selected Investigations as it’s primary text for elementary students about 4 years ago. I joined the fight to get the school board to dump Investigations but so far no luck (I even created my own blog – http://www.pwceducationreform.wordpress.com).

Since then I’ve been after-schooling (basically home school lite done in the after school hours for selected topics). I use Singapore for math and have become increasingly frustrated with our public schools because my kids are bored out of their skulls. I’ve been thinking about yanking my kids from school but worry that I’m not cut out for homeschooling.

When you decided to home school, were you worried about making sure your kids got enough social interaction with other kids? My youngest is a very social kid (he’s 5) and he love love loves school. I’d hate to pull him and have him miss out on something he so clearly loves, but I’m worried about his academic future. My oldest (grade 2) isn’t quite as social and I could pull him easily and he’d be pretty happy as long as he still had friends over to visit on a regular basis.

I tried to see if the schools would approve part time enrollment for elementary school but they only offer that at the middle and high school level. Were you afraid and how did you get over your fears?

    Thanks!

I just posted on this subject. Check it out! I’m not sure it answers your question but it tells how I feel.
